About Me

Dr. Joel Lavine has also made significant contributions to education. He spent the last eight years as the Vice Chairman for Faculty and Fellow Development at the University of California, San Diego, or UCSD.

He created a thorough curriculum for the Department of Pediatrics fellows. Mentoring, article preparation, networking, medical economics, communication, speaker presentations, research development, and other topics were covered in this curriculum.

He also helped junior personnel by organizing a mentor/mentee program.

For eight years, he taught the pathophysiology of liver disease to UCSD's first-year medical students.

He previously served as the director of the Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, a program he founded in collaboration with the American Board of Pediatrics.

He also received program accreditation from the American College of Graduate Medical Education during this time.

He has personally supervised several fellows and faculty members who have gone on to win national accolades. Among them is Jeff Schwimmer, MD, who received the AGA Young Clinical Investigator Award. In addition, Columbia University awarded the Pediatric Scientist Development Award to Sarah Taylor, MD, and Dana Goldner, MD, as well as the AASLD Young Researcher Prize to Rene Romero.
